(A true story)
Mr. Singh spent more than 10 lakhs in 4 yrs with the hope that one day, he will get back the job. He also believed that the bank will pay him the salary for 4yrs that he wasted fighting to get his job back. In a word, the Government might describe it as an information glitch, but for many like Mr. Singh it meant a loss of their job. And, unlike Mr. Singh, everyone was not lucky to their jobs back.
There was a time in the early 21st Century which brought into fashion the concept of Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS). Everyone everywhere applied for a retirement which was earlier considered as an age-barred concept at 60. Well, a lot of people who wanted to venture into business took the opportunity to break the bondage of working under people- well Mr. Singh had similar plans too. With 5 mouths to feed and only double income, it didn’t seem possible. He decided to wait it before giving up his job and withdrew his VRS application. He worked doubly hard to make life easy for his kids who were venturing into higher education. The hard work paid off in a year. Mr. Singh got promoted. But the happiness was short lived
In a matter of 5 months, thousands of people lost their job being told that their VRS had been approved. Amongst them where people who had withdrawn their application. With the fire to fight for their rights, these thousands went to the high court, and very easily lost the case. For Mr. Singh, it was not defeat. He approached the Supreme Court amongst people who laughed and mocked at him. But then the Supreme Court returned the case back to the High Court.
The fight went on for 4yrs. He did not give up for a moment- he fought till the day his bank offered him his job back. Though the 4 yrs are gone and his kids are all well established now, Mr. Singh today feels the peace that he hadn’t given up and fought till the end. The bank won’t be paying him the salary for the 4yrs, neither would nature give him back the precious moments he spent fighting for his rights. But today, in his office he feels the pride of being able to fight an institution alone.
