Plagiarism in Indian film music

Being from a journalism school, I understand how serious “plagiarism’ is. Well, it hurts even more if you are on the other side. That is, your work is plagiarised and the credit is given to the person who plagiarised.

The Indian Film Industry, which we call Bollywood sets an example for the youth. The music industry is huge. But, can we give the industry all the credit? When I look at the chronicles of plagiarism in indian film music, I am shocked beyond words. People we look upto, people we think are so talented are nothing more than mere “copycats”!

Even semi-Gods like RD Burman and AR Rahman have also plagiarised songs under their names.

One thing is for sure, if nothing else, our music directors are really knowledgable about music, using Korean, Mexican and even Spanish music in their songs. I really hope, they would attribute the sources properly. It would make them more respectable.

I’d have to admit plagerized songs are a real pain in the butt... even when they have been ”adapted” like when ”mera piya ghar aaya oh laal ni” gets mutilated into ”mera piya ghar aaya oh ram ji”, you really start to feel if teh composers really think induian audiences are dumb and deaf rats who wouldnt find out where the song has been lifted off of!!

It is a sick trend and though its quite a catch 22 situation, I think I’d rather tolerate Anu Malik crooning and original number like ”dekho barish ho rahi hai” then killing someone else’s song!!

I know. It would so much better if they could just tell the audience where they took the music from. You know, its okay if somebody is using your work, only if prior permisiion is taken and proper credit is given...

All I want is these composers rather than smiling and accepting the applauds just stand up and honestly tell the world. Atleast I would respect them more...

Well...It surely hurts.....But...we perhaps cannot stop it completely.

I know Kumar. It would be utopia if everything would be perfect... But whats the harm in hoping one day we will achieve it?

Every second song is copied nowadays. Earlie it used to be English songs. Now they are going all over the world and sometimes you don’t even get to know that it was copied! The worst part is they also win awards with plagiarized music!

Hahaha... I think the music directors who plagiarize must be of the opinion that, if movies can be copied, why not music?

Now-a-day plagiarism is everywhere in the Indian film industry, I mean themes and stories of Bollywood movies. What do you say?

I have always loved works by AR Rehman and RD Burman, though rip off usually put me off.

Plagiarism is one of the factors that put me off Indian film industry, be it a movie script or music.

What sucks most is scene to scene/note to note copy. I mean if you are copying then put a lil bit effort to make it bit different, get inspired . It’s better than stealing.
